Hearing Aid Fittings

Fitting hearing aids takes time to ensure the settings are tailored specifically to each patient’s needs. We typically allow 1 hour for this appointment. We first confirm the physical fit and comfort of the hearing aids. We teach the patient how to insert and remove the devices, clean them, and replace the batteries so they feel confident handling them.

Programming the hearing aids is done by computer with the patient ‘attached’ wirelessly. Changes are made in real time with the patient being able to hear the differences immediately. Sound bites such as party noise, TV newscasts, birds, and music help the patient and family members experience the differences the hearing aids are making.

Real Ear Measurements/Speech Mapping allows us to make an objective measurement that confirms the hearing aids are providing the best possible results. Completing these measurements follows best practices in hearing aid fitting. This involves using a probe microphone in the ear canal to record responses to recorded and live speech with and without the hearing aids in place. This allows the patient and family to visualize the improvement the hearing aids are offering. This results in a more accurate fitting during the initial session.

Follow-up sessions are typically held every two to three weeks during the adjustment period. This allows the patient to use the hearing aids in their daily activities to determine any need for adjustments at the next visit.
